Pipe Bands

1906 saw the introduction of a Pipe Band Competition at Cowal and is now host to one of five 'Majors' in the Pipe Band Calendar. The Cowal Pipe Band Championships is very often one of the favourite dates of the season for Band Members due to the unique atmosphere created by Cowal's natural amphitheatre. The march past together with the massed pipes and drums of around 150 pipe bands brings an unparalleled climax to the Cowal Highland Gathering.

The difference is that in 1906 only a dozen or so bands competed. Today, 150 bands contest the Cowal Championships - and close the Gathering with the landmark which is unique to Cowal, the March Past and Salute to the Chieftain by 3,000 Pipes and Drums.
