Traditional Wrestling
2007 saw the reintroduction of traditional backhold wrestling to Cowal and in 2008 we held the Scottish Championship bout at the 15st 7lbs weight. Traditional wrestling which been in existence since the 8th century and has been part of highland games since they started.
5K Race
Thursday night sees the popular 5K fun run taking place after the finish of the dancing events in the stadium. Registration for the race can be done by printing the
entry form on our website and sending to the Gathering Office. Alternatively a form can be collected from the GAthering office or you can register on the night.
Registration starts at 6.15pm in the Queens HAll and the race starts at 7.15 from next the the Yachtsman Cafe. Medals are given to all finishers and there is cash prizes for the winners.
West End Entertainment Arena - Saturday
Drum Major's Challenge
Back by popular demand is this fun event for both Adult and Junior Drum Majors. It will begin on the West End Arena immediately after the official competition finishes. The crowd loves watching the Drum Majors "showing off" trying to throw their mace over the high bar with a flourish. Although there are prizes for the most successful it really is a relaxed and informal event loved by both the competitors and the spectators.
FRIDAY NIGHT FAMILY CEILIDH DANCE
This year, for the first time, the Cowal gathering will be holding a family ceilidh on Friday 26th August in the Queens Hall.
The popular and accomplished Ballochmyle Ceilidh Band will be playing a selection of traditional scottish music which is guaranteed to have everyone joining in the scottish ceilish dancing. The band are also renowned for their contemporary cover versions from the likes of Robbie Williams and Coldplay so we can expect for few surprises for the young and the young at heart.
We also hope to have a local pipe band playing during the ceilidh bands break. More details to follow.
Tickets are on sale now via the homepage of this website. Early booking is recommended as the ceilidh dance is expected to sell out fast.
